11/5-11/6 ~ The Second Mini Festival of Recent Asian American Films
Friday, November 5 – Saturday, November 6
Pitzer College
This year’s Festival, organized and curated by the students of Asian Americans in Media (MS100 PZ), features films and videos selected from the 2010 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival line-up. Highlights include the feature films THE PEOPLE I’VE SLEPT WITH, directed by Quentin Lee, and RASBERRY MAGIC, directed by Leena Pendharker; US premiere of a new film by Media Studies alumna and current AARC Program Coordinator Karin Mak; as well as shorts and documentaries addressing issues ranging from Asian American Army Lt. Ehren Watada’s fight against what he believes is a constitutionally illegal war, the original Star Trek’s George Takei in bed with his husband, hip hop in the Philippines, transgender experiences, and the lives of mixed heritage children in Japanese American internment camps. All Festival events are free and open to the public.

“Hypervisibility and Invisibility: The Indochinese Women’s Conferences and Asian American Women”

In spring of 1971, over 100 Asian American women attended the Indochinese Women’s Conference in Vancouver, Canada. There, they met with Vietnamese and Laotian women engaged in struggles of national libertation against American Imperialism. This talk explores how Indochinese women, who occupied a position of hypervisibility in the context of the U.S. War in Vietnam, inspired Asian American women, who tended to be relegated to a status of invisibility within the broader American political landscape.
